Some Kermode film reviews

Posted on July 16, 2008 | 5 comments |

My favourite film reviewer is Mark Kermode. You can see him on BBC2's Culture Show and listen to him on BBC Radio 5 Live, which helpfully carries a podcast of his weekly reviews for Simon Mayo.

However, there's also a video stream, despite the fact it's a radio show, and Radio 5 also uploads some of the best bits onto YouTube. So here are some classic Kermode reviews for your enjoyment.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3

A mash up of his Iron Man review with the trailer

Jason Isaacs accuses Mark Kermode of being wrong about Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean 3

And lastly, Paris Hilton's The Hottie and the Nottie

Kermode IS King. I love listening to him sparring with Simon Mayo, even when I don't agree with him. He is SOOO wrong about Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean, but I forgive him because he is so entertaining being wrong. And I loved him and Simon Mayo doing Chariots of Fire in sandals (Mark Kermode that is, not Simon Mayo).

I sometimes catch him if I get away from work early on POETS Day, but had only heard the last of these three. What's sad is that his reviews are so much better than just about every Hollywood release he reviews. What recent film has a line as good as his nest of tables gag? Classic!

Kermode is so brilliant. I have the podcast from the Mayo review show on subscription and have had many hours of entertainment from listening. The Da Vinci Code review was a classic (Kermode screaming "PUT THE BLOODY LIGHTS ON!!") and whatever film it was where he was talking about Jean-Claude Van Damm never fails to crack me up ("Arnold Schwartzenegger - Beefcake; Richard Gere - cheesecake; Jean-Claude Van Damm - barmcake").

I agree with Jane Henry about Pirates (1, but not the dreadful sequels) and I too fall around laughing at the reviews and regular rants that Kermode would do on the topic!

Oh, I'm so torn ... Kermode is right about Pirates but Jason Isaacs is just so damn attractive and suave that I'm nearly agreeing with him instead. And therein lies the reason, probably, that Depp's performance won people over - they knew the film was shit, but Johnny Depp is just so cool ...

    Thanks for posting those.
