David Tennant and Kylie Minogue

Doctor Who

  • Oh, Rusty, Rusty, Rusty. Will anyone believe anything you say again? Yes, Kylie Minogue will be starring in the Christmas special
  • The Sun lists the odds for who will be the next companion. Top of the list: Loo Brealey from Casualty (she auditioned for the role of Rose so not totally unlikely) and Rose Byrne from 28 Weeks Later (she was also in Casanova, so again, not totally unlikely)

It looks like The Sun is only interested in betting on the ladies. I'd think it was time to bring on a male companion to alter the dynamic a bit.

I suppose after Captain Jack, people might be expecting the stories to then go in a certain direction, but it's not like the TARDIS is such close quarters. (That needed an Eric Idle-style nudge and a wink.)

It said on the sun poll that it could be 2 companions - I vote for Sally Sparrow & her blokey from 'Blink'. it would be nice to have a loved-up couple, thereby avoiding all the 'unspoken love for the Doctor' that's gone on for 3 series. Then he can get on with saving the universe...

Dear God, the Kylie Minogue thing was *true*? That'll teach me to be sceptical. Then again, at least she's not a Cyberwoman, as they first claimed...

There's such a groundswell of support for Sally & Larry that I think they might actually do it. It would be brilliant. I would retrospectively withdraw my complaints about it being difficult to invest in Blink because we're never going to see the characters again (I kind of feel like withdrawing that anyway, because it was so obviously a classic episode.)

Having said that, Rose Byrne is great so she'd be a fab choice, but if it's Jennifer Ellison I may have to stop watching.

I thought the 'two companions' comment was because of Martha coming back for the second half of the series. I'm still voting for Sparrow and Nightingale, though. Otherwise, they'd only get their own series. On ITV.

Rose Byrne would be fab. And according to IMDB, doesn't have any films in production at the moment...

Are you sure...? We don't know if this is the real Titanic or some space version populated by Cybermen (and women). We haven't had a cyber-story this year yet.

Russell's actual comment in response to the original rumour was, "I haven't even written the script yet, and a woman like that is booked up two years in advance." He notably didn't actually deny she would be appearing...

He prefaced it with "Don't be stupid". I suppose you could interpret that as just a general insult to the reporter at Ariel, rather than the usual usage...

And speaking of not believing Rusty, he also said that there would never be a multi-Doctor story on his watch. And the ninth Doctor was on the Titanic.

    Just sayin'.

REALLY?! Ooooohh. I totally don't believe anything RTD says, so it could definitely happen.

And Toby, I totally agree that the next companion should be male - I said that when Rose left too, but did RTD listen? No. ;)

He still didn't outright deny it. In my experience, when someone is so evasive in the press, it's a delay tactic. The moment I read that quote from RTD, I believed that the rumour was true.

Me, too, actually. I stopped believing anything Rusty said ages ago.

The Titanic was mentioned by Tombo in The Invasion of Time (the Doctor claimed that he "wasn't responsible" for the disaster). In The End of the World, Eccles cake said that he was "clinging to an iceberg" after surviving the sinking of an 'unsinkable ship'.

RTD could find a loophole a mile wide in that.

As for a male companion, maybe, but RTD does love getting teenage girls to watch and he seems to think they need a point of reference/possible romantic interest for the Doctor they can relate to. I couldn't possibly comment about whether that's true or not.

P.S. I agree that Rose Byrne would be great. But I'd like to suggest that, if it has to be a girl, that Sheridan Smith should progress from radio to tv companion. She's such a warm performer (ignore the BBC Three crap).

I think it's probably true. But you underestimate the popularity of SLASH. Haha.

I am aware of the genre. However, "now you are one of us", RTD already has your heart and mind - he wants new recruits and the new recruits aren't reading slash fiction (yet).

Eccles may have said he was on the Titanic, but did he specify which body he was in at the time? I don't think he'd show up for love nor money. I reckon Paul McGann would though...

    It's Catherine Tate.

    Catherine Tate.

    Catherine Bloody Tate.

He didn't specify which body, now you mention it, but we do know that D9 did stop a family from boarding the Titanic, and probably not too long after he regenerated, as he was wearing Edwardian clothing at the time.

This is, if Eccles said he'd be available, you just know that RTD would write him in like a shot. He laps up that sort of stuff. He'd be bouncing up and down with glee. Especially as Eccles have to be playing D9 pre-Rose, and D10 would have to keep stopping him from doing stupidly self-destructive stuff.
