Yeah, that's a spoiler, although I think it's something that most people have guessed.
Interesting article, that. He doesn't understand what interactive means, does he? And that might be why his sci-fi frequently doesn't work for me. Yes, character and emotion are important; they're important in any sort of fiction. But what RTD doesn't address is the interaction between people and technology, which is why his scripts can seem like sci-fi with grafted-on emotion, or straight drama with grafted-on gadgetry (which results in the feeling of 'soapiness' that he rejects so strongly).
When sci-fi works, it's about how technology affects people. Some of the Who writers can do that very well (Stephen Moffatt, particularly; Toby Whithouse did a very good job, too). RTD still misses the mark a bit too often, although he did a better job in his Torchwood episode.
